Contemporary Casta Portraiture: Nuestra “Calidad”
April 11 - May 13, 2018
Casta#2, Delilah Montoya
Contemporary Casta Portraiture: Nuestra “Calidad” is an ethnographic art project by Delilah Montoya that examines the ethnic roots of families with colonial heritage. This series is 16 genre portraits along with DNA test results. As illustrated by the legendary 18th century colonial casta paintings, the project builds on the New World global community paradigm. The nuances woven into the topic are identity, colonial power struggles, family history, the optic-unconscious, biogeographic ethnography, and how these experiences are expressed in our contemporary lives and culture. As part of Transart Foundation, an experimental art and anthropology workshop, grand opening founded by Surpik Angelini, the event will feature the exhibition Nuestra “Calidad,” a panel discussion, along with a performance and workshop by Elia Arce.
