The University of Houston hosted a groundbreaking ceremony in the Fine Arts Quadrangle near the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre. The School of Theatre building, which houses the Wortham Theatre, is currently being renovated to enlarge the entrance façade, add much-needed rehearsal space, and house the future offices of the Mitchell Center for the Arts. While the theatre itself will retain Mrs. Wortham’s name, the building as a whole will be renamed the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts. The ceremony included brief performances from the School of Theatre, the Division of Dance, the Creative Writing Program, and the Moores School of Music and alternated with remarks from UH President and System Chancellor Jay Gogue; Sidney Berger, Director of the UH School of Theatre and the first Executive Director of the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts; John Antel, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences; and benefactor George Mitchell. Additionally, a site-specific installation of new artwork created by faculty and students from the UH School of Art in the Fine Arts Courtyard was included as part of the festivities.
