The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston will present Tanks Under Trees, an original one-time-only performance by a rare mix of celebrated artists.  Tanks Under Trees is a collaboration between Anne Waldman, poet and spoken word performer; Douglas Dunn, dancer, choreographer, artistic director of Douglas Dunn & Dancers in New York City; and Houston-based musicians Max Dyer, an improvising cellist, and Conrado “Charry” Garcia, a multi-instrumentalist.  The piece integrates spoken word, dance, and music, and is drawn from Waldman’s critically acclaimed book Structure of The World Compared to a Bubble (2004).

Veterans in the world of collaborative art-making, artists Waldman and Dunn have each been recognized for breaking new ground in this manner in their respective disciplines.  Tanks Under Trees will be a dynamic, fierce, and moving piece structured to allow the elements of text, movement, sound, and projected film to be intricately interwoven, as well as individually highlighted.  Part- established text and choreography, part- improvised in the moment of creation, Tanks Under Trees will allow room for the unexpected to occur.  Students will participate in some aspects of the presentation.

For details on the performance, possible master classes with the artists, or the Mitchell Center’s other upcoming events, call 713-743-5548.
