American comics are changing fast. Bolstered by the literary ambitions, international influences and the growing importance of new technologies, the comics landscape shifts regularly in increasingly unpredictable directions. How does an art form communicate content effectively when all assumptions about its form are up for grabs? Noted author and comics artist Scott McCloud visits UH to put all these trends into perspective in a fast-moving visual presentation.
During his visit he will also participate in the Graphic Novel workshop, a UH course taught by professor Mat Johnson, offered by Creative Writing Program, in collaboration with the Mitchell Center and the School of Art. The course is an introduction and exploration of modern graphic storytelling through both critical examination and workshop of original creative work within the form. Students and visiting artists focus on the medium and tools of graphic storytelling, its reoccurring themes and genres, and their relationship with modern storytelling.
