With its 80-member faculty and more than 600 music majors, the Moores School of Music's thriving programs place it in the forefront of music schools today. Undergraduate and graduate degrees through the doctoral level are offered in theory, performance, composition, music history, pedagogy, conducting, and music education. Approximately 80 percent of Moores School graduates remain in the Houston area, thus providing a major infusion of superbly trained musicians to the community’s professional performance organizations and other musical enterprises.
Although the primary mission of the Moores School of Music is to educate and train professional performers and teachers, the school also serves the community at large with its public concerts and class offerings. For example, the Moores School produces events such as the Immanuel and Helen Olshan Texas Music Festival, the International Piano Series, and four fully staged opera productions each year. Additionally, the Moores School supports alliances with the city's esteemed arts organizations including the Houston Symphony, Houston Grand Opera, and Society for the Performing Arts. The Moores School of Music's commitment to academic excellence and the highest performance standards has made the institution a vital resource in the educational and cultural life of both the University community and the City of Houston.
