The School of Theatre, previously known as the Department of Drama until 1994 when the Division of Dance and Center for Choreography were added, offers a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Teacher Certification in Dance, and both Masters and Master of Fine Arts degrees. Its academic course offerings range from the history of theatre, to dance, directing, technical production, costume and makeup design, and period acting styles.
The School of Theatre combines roles of professional arts producer with its function as a conservatory that prepares students for the professional theatre world, as well as the academic theatre realm. During the school year the School of Theatre produces a main stage season of four plays and a dance concert, the Edward Albee Playwrights' Workshop, the Stuart Ostrow Musical Theatre Workshop, and various student productions on campus in the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre. During the summer months, the School also produces the Children’s Theatre Festival and the Houston Shakespeare Festival at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston’s centrally-located Hermann Park.
Faculty members of the School of Theatre include the world’s leading Shakespearean director, a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer, a three-time Pulitzer Prize and two-time Tony Award-winning playwright, and one of Broadway’s top scenic designers. Additionally, the School of Theatre collaborates with the Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre, sponsoring classes taught by visiting Alley staff and co-productions combining both theatre students and Alley cast members.
