ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Life Is Living, Marc Bamuthi Joseph

Artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph comes to Houston for an extended visit as part of his ongoing Mitchell Center residency. Co-hosted by Third Ward-based organization Project Row Houses, Bamuthi will develop his new performance work, red, black, and GREEN, a blues, and will help organize the November 2010 festival Life is Living: Houston as part of his national campaign that uses urban street arts to engage communities of color in environmentalism and sustainable living. While in Houston, Bamuthi will also visit the special sociology course Hip Hop Culture and the Environment with Marc Bamuthi Joseph. |

ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Oil, Amy Patton

Berlin-based artist Amy Patton joins us in-residence to develop Oil, a filmed theatre work commissioned by the Mitchell Center with support from Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the University of Houston, and created in collaboration with UH School of Theatre & Dance.
Oil is based on petroleum-influenced lifestyles and economic forecasting that dramatizes our society’s experiences with objects and commodities. The film will serve as the cornerstone of Patton’s Fall 2010 Blaffer solo exhibition.

Comics and Visual Communication, Scott McCloud

American comics are changing fast. Bolstered by the literary ambitions, international influences and the growing importance of new technologies, the comics landscape shifts regularly in increasingly unpredictable directions. How does an art form communicate content effectively when all assumptions about its form are up for grabs? Noted author and comics artist Scott McCloud visits UH to put all these trends into perspective in a fast-moving visual presentation.
During his visit McCloud will also participate in the Graphic Novel workshop, a course taught by professor Mat Johnson, offered by the Creative Writing Program in collaboration with the Mitchell Center and the School of Art.
