FINAL PRESENTATION UH students and the Center for Land Use Interpretation Friday May 9 6:30 - 8:30 pm

 The Mitchell Center has been hosting The Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) in residence on Houston's Buffalo Bayou since January 2008. Based on their months of interactions with CLUI, students in the UH School of Art, Creative Writing Program, and College of Architecture have produced experimental mappings of Houston, writings about Buffalo Bayou, and proposals for sustainable building and landscaping which will be on view at Lawndale Art Center from May 9 - 17.
Join us for an opening reception at Lawndale on May 9, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The evening will begin with a reading by UH Creative Writing students and other special guests.

For the Spring 2008 installment of Artists Up Close, in conjunction with the exhibition Chantal Akerman: Moving Through Time and Space, the series takes the form of a Contemporary Salon. The discussion will be led by Bill Arning, Curator at MIT List Visual Arts Center and Terrie Sultan, Director of Blaffer Gallery, plus other special guests.

An exhibition preview reception and Contemporary Salon with Ronald K. Brown, exhibition co-curator and Founder and Artistic Director, Evidence, A Dance Company; Ray Carrington III, Photographer and Founder, "Eye on Third Ward"; Wendy Watriss, Co-founder and Artistic Director, FotoFest; and Deborah Willis, exhibition co-curator and Chair and Professor of Photography and Imaging, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. The Salon will be moderated by Katherine Veneman, Curator of Education, Blaffer Gallery. The exhibition, which consists of 32 photographs by Charles "Teenie" Harris (1908 - 1998), provided inspiration for Brown's new monumental choreographic work One Shot which will be presented by DiverseWorks at Society for the Performing Arts on May 10.
Part of a city-wide collaboration involving the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston, DiverseWorks, Society for the Performing Arts, Blaffer Gallery, and Project Row Houses.

PERFORMANCE Nothing To It (An evening of itty bitty witty ditties), The Art Guys Saturday May 3 8:00 pm

Celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, The Art Guys will present Nothing to It (An evening of itty bitty witty ditties), a retrospective of staged performances, some of which have not been seen in more than 12 years! Nothing to It will include "Wrap Music," a musical arrangement performed entirely on industrial strength wrapping material and "Inverted Karaoke," which features the duo singing songs karaoke-style while the audience is unable to hear the music. Additionally, The Art Guys will unveil new “world premieres never seen before by man nor beast” plus many more surprises throughout the evening - and as always, intentionally unrehearsed!

ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE Center for Land Use Interpretation Spring 2008

 Beginning in January 2008 the Mitchell Center, in partnership with the University of Houston School of Art and Creative Writing Program, hosts the Center for Land Use Interpretation (CLUI) for a residency that focuses on the Buffalo Bayou, the Houston Ship Channel, and their environs. In Spring 2009, following the completion of their Mitchell Center residency, CLUI will offer a series of public programs in conjunction with a major exhibition at Blaffer Gallery, the Art Museum of the Unviersity of Houston.
